The upper stems of pilewort (Erechtites hieracifolia) end in panicles of flowerheads consisting of numerous tubular disk florets, which are enclosed by green bracts that are smooth and linear. The corollas of the disk florets, which are barely visible above the bracts, are white. This results in a flower that looks like it is closed, as seen in the picture. When Pilewort goes to seed it will develop tufts of soft white hair that are dispersed by the wind.
