Canada wildrye seems to depend on producing a large number of seeds rather than a long life to maintain populations. It is also able to reproduce vegetatively. Although it grows well in its first year, there is evidence that the seeds produced that year are not viable. Seeds produced the second year are usually viable. We just liked the visually interesting tufts that is displays.
