Yellow Nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) is a native perennial. The leaves are waxy, yellow to green in color, and have a prominent midrib. It may reach a height of 2.5 feet. Most reproduction of this sedge is accomplished by the underground root system containing rhizomes and underground tubers. The tubers (nutlets) form at the end of whitish rhizomes. These are the only part of the plant that over-winters.
This specimen grew up next to a common milkweed. We did not even notice it until it was this tall.
